Moyowosi Game Reserve was gazetted in 1981. It is situated in Kigoma Region in the western part of Tanzania and covers an area of 6,000 km2 lying on the edge of the great central plateau between the East and western Rift Valley arms, with an altitude ranging from 800m to 1,600m. It forms a major part of the Malagarasi- Muyovosi Ramsar Site, which is the first Ramsar Site in Tanzania.
Annual rainfall in the reserve varies between 1,000mm and 1,500mm. The dry season starts in mid May and ends in mid October with maximum temperature of 29oC.
The vegetation is mainly Miombo woodland characterized by dominated by Blood wood (Pterocarpus angolensis) and African black wood (Dalbergia melanoxylon). Malagalasi-Moyowosi wetland is the large and excellent example of an East African floodplain wetland ecosystem in good condition.
The reserve is recognized by supporting large populations of buffalo, Topi, Lion, Giraffe, Zebra, Hartebeest, Roan antelope, Greater kudu Waterbuck Sitatunga, Hippo and the Crocodile. Bird species found in the reserve include wattled crane and Shoebill stock.
The reserve can be accessed by chartered light aircraft, scheduled flight, road using Four wheel and train.
Kigosi Game Reserve
Kigosi Game Reserve was gazetted in 1983. It is the third largest game reserve in the country after the Selous and Rungwa Game Reserve. It covers an area of 7000 km2 extending from Bukombe and Kahama District in Shinyanga Region to Urambo District in Tabora Region. It forms part of the Malagarasi- Muyovozi Ramsar Site.
